Something New: Cécil McLorin - Wives and Lovers
Cécil McLorin's voice in this tune reminds me of Jeanne Lee; a lovely mellow clear tone and a delivery that's laid back but a little bit cheeky. The video is simple, beautifully shot and the dancer's movement is like a kaleidoscope image you could watch forever.
| | Wives and Lovers could be straight off of The Newest Sound Around! I tend to not be into retro music, where it sounds too much like it came from another era, and to my ear this almost slips into pastiche but the delivery is so good that it draws me in. I'm hooked. |
Something Old (but new to me!)
| I came across this beautiful live performance of Something's Coming by Jeanne Lee and Ran Blake. When I was little my Dad had two videos on VHS: West Side Story and Hamlet and I absolutely loved when he'd watch West Side Story and hated when he'd watch Hamlet*! Me and my sister would run around the house singing Maria as loud as we could but replacing Maria's name with our own. I was too young to understand everything in the movie (like what was special about having your own washing machine!?) but at seven years old I totally understood that mix of anticipation and blind enthusiasm! | |
*I watched loads of cheesy kids movies too growing up I swear! That description makes it sound like I never heard of Nickelodeon and we sat around talking about Flemish painters all day!
