q. what style of music do you sing?

I would describe the music I write as acoustic art-pop with jazz and choral influences with a strong emphasis on storytelling, but it often gets described by others simply as jazz. Please feel free to have a listen to it and describe it however you see fit. Personally I pay very little heed to genre, it can be a useful tool and is great for organising your CD collection (does anyone have them anymore?) but as far as accurately describing music goes it is a very blunt instrument.

q. who are your influences?

When I first set up a myspace profile (does anyone have them anymore?!) I listed my influences as 'the weather and my hormones'. Although that answer is still true I've come to realise that it isn't very helpful to people who want to know more about my music, so I've tried to find some common ground between some of the innumerable things that might possibly have an impact on my music. What I've come up with is:

Short stories that incorporate elements of magical realism are a big influence, such as the short stories of Miranda July and Neil Gaiman, as are traditional folk stories about monsters. Musically my influences are songwriters who incorporate contemporary compositional ideas into a pop context such as Becca Stevens, Julie Feeney and Bjork.

q. when is big starving Thing being released?

It was released June 14th (2015) and is now available from Tower Records Dublin, Plugd Records Cork, from this very website (go to the 'Shop' page) as well as all the usual places online (Spotify, iTunes, Amazon...etc.). You can also get a copy direct from me at any of my gigs. After I finish singing songs at my gigs I usually come out to chat and sell CDs so come along and say hi!
