A Video for springtime

Spring has sprung in Dublin which got me thinking about the song Show Me because it's set in a garden at springtime. Instead of sitting at home twiddling my thumbs waiting for the CDs to be posted out to me from the manufacturers I decided to make a video for Show Me. So with very limited resources: my phone, a very old computer with some free 'make your own movie' type software and some McGuyver like resourcefulness I got to work.

Initially I had thought I'd do a stop motion video of paper flowers blooming, I'd seen the stunning Chanel Spring Summer 2015 runway show and had in mind to do something inspired by that (on a fraction of their paper clip budget obviously).

After experimenting with some paper flowers I quickly decide that something more abstract that referenced organic forms was the way to go. Like this sea urchin dude, or this grass/bug thing:

I was thinking about the lyrics to Show Me and how they're about someone who wants to know how the world works, who sees things 'bursting blooming' and is thinking what is this strange blooming machine, what does it do and why and it got me thinking about the connotations we have with flowers. When we see flowers we see decoration, romance, prettiness but just think about the incredible mechanics of how a flower works! There's nothing twee about the opening and closing, the pushing up, bursting out of a tiny seed, the complex petal pattern...it's the stuff of science-y magic really! So I wanted to make to make the kind of images that made you think to yourself What is that? It's paper? How does it move? What does it mean?.

Hopefully I've captured a smidgen of that newborn curiosity.
